Sea
stars, brittle stars
and sea urchins
Sea stars are sometimes seen on Changi. The most commonly seen are
the Sand stars that forage on the sand and mudflats. Occasionally,
Biscuit stars are seen near the seagrass areas. Some sea stars are
only found under rocks.
Brittle stars are echinoderms like sea stars, but belong to a different
subgroup. Unlike sea stars, brittle stars have long, highly flexible
arms attached to a small central disc. Brittle stars are more easily
seen when it's dark. During the day, they hide in the sand or under
rocks.
Sea urchins are echinoderms too! They are seasonally abundant on Changi.
