Sea
pens
Sea pens are related to corals, jellyfish and sea anemones.
Sea pens are actually a colony of individual polyps. One polyp forms
the central 'stalk', others the side branches on this stalk, and yet
others help keep the entire colony pumped up with seawater.
One end of the stalk is buried in the ground while the other sticks
out to filter feed. Some sea pens are thin and pencil-like. Others
look like the large feathers that were used in the past to write with:
hence their common name.
A wider variety of sea pens is usually seen in the early morning or
late evening. In the heat of the day, they are usually retracted into
the ground.
