Corals
and
colonial cnidarians
Coral are often mistaken for plants, but they are animals. Each clump
is a colony of minute polyps with tentacles that feed on food particles
in the water.
Small clumps of hard corals encrust the rocks. Occasionally, soft
coral is washed further up the shore. Fire corals grow in thick bunches
on the rocks and pilings on Changi.
Tiny banded bead anemones grow on rocks and even inside the shells
of dead anemones. Zoanthids are colonial sea anemones that cover the
rocks in a flowery carpet.
